Let's Look Surroundings to Learn The Earth and Space Science for Our Students

ABSTRACT

To learn the earth and space science, you should explain about many things. For example: historical of earth, solar system, and universe; the dynamical process in the earth surface and the space, etc. You should use any instruments and methods to explain them. But, if there are nothing facilities, you must be creative to make your students understanding the matter. Beside that, you should ask your students to look their surrounding to get new knowledge or to applicated their known in the class to the reality.

Keywords: dynamical process, look surroundings

Introduction

Learning earth and space science is needed many instruments and methods. Why? Because the range of matter is very wide. For example, you must explain for your students about historical of earth forming and is mean you must be explain first about some theories about forming solar system and universe. After earth was formed, you must continue to explain about the dynamical process that happened in the bottom and the surface of the earth. You must explain about volcanism, earthquake, plate tectonic, tsunami, geology disaster, etc.
To learn earth and space science, its needed explaining about solar system and the universe. You must explain about galaxies, stars, planets, satellite, komet, what happened in our solar system, rotation and revolution, etc. So, you need any times before come in the class because you should bring some instruments and methods.
One method that should you try is field study. You could have ask your students to observe the surrounding them and find out the phenomenon that has been related to their subject in the class. If your located near from mountain, your students would be learn about how the mountain formed, what kinds of the rocks or the soils, the mountain is active or not, etc. If your located from sea, your students would be learn about why there one place as ocean and the other place as continent, how about the morfology of the sea, how to measure the depth of the sea, what caused and the effect of the warm current and cold current, relationship about tides and gravity of moon and the sun, etc.

Method

There are some methods to learning earth and space science, for example: observation, discussion, experiment, field study, problem solving, and project. Firstly, you should be understanding the characteristic of  the matter. After that, you should be know what the instrument needed, and you should be creative to make it. Basicly, instruments should have support our methods and the purpose is how to make the matter could be understood by our students easily.

No.
Method
Instrument
1.
Observation
Picture, map, guidance of observ, powerpoint, video.
2.
Discussion
Topic to discuss.
3.
Experiment
Guidance of experiment, tools.
4.
Field study
Map, camera, guidance to study.
5.
Problem solving
The problems has to be solve.
6.
Project
Guidance to project.

To explain about the dynamics of lithosphere and to describes about solar system and the universe, you should use the video or many software to do for example powerpoint, flash, etc. If yo near from the volcanoes, you should be guide your students to close. But, if its imposibble, you could use the multimedia to cover.

Result and Discussion

Learning earth and space science isn’t easy. But, its possible way that you colud have many instruments and methods to explain them. The keyword is “be craetive!” There are many sources that you could have been getting by internet, some lecturer or scientist in universities, or in your group teacher in your district. Perhaps, from your students project you would be get many new knowledge.

Actually, there are many problems in our school that didn’t solved, foe example:
a.      Intrusion sea water (our groundwater is salty).
b.      Annual flood (it make the access to our school stopped).
c.       Minimalize the facilities to support our learning process (there are no laboratory, no library, no mosque, some class haven’t table and chair).
d.      Less motivation from our students and their parents to learning well (almost of them just orinted to get the certificate to get the jobs).

These pictures bellow will be  describe our challenges in our school (about annual flood):
